Bishop Doran letter of September 24, 2010

Rockford, IL- It is with great respect and pride we post this letter from the Bishop of Rockford regarding recent events involving pro-life citizens in Rockford.

Bishop Thomas G. Doran
Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Rockford
The practice of abortion in our country and city holds hidden dangers
An old story has it that a priest/professor once mounted his pulpit to preach on suicide and he began: “Suicide is not only a mortal sin, but is very dangerous.” One could say with some justification the same thing about procured abortion; it is a mortal sin and is very dangerous. At least practicing Catholics know that it is sinful and many other Christians do as well.
In our devolving and decaying morally relativistic society, there are many people who regard the killing of a pre-born child as of no consequence whatever. What is hidden from the eyes of the unsuspecting, however, is that not only for its victims but also for its perpetrators and for societies that permit it, allow it and license it, it is extremely dangerous.
All of us are aware of the perilous financial condition into which corrupt politicians of both parties have cast our country. Particularly vexing to our congressional overlords are the so-called entitlements: Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and other such things as unemployment compensation and various types of government relief. What we are never told is that the reason these entitlements are becoming unbearable for the taxpaying public is that there are fewer and fewer people contributing funds by way of their taxes to support these needed benefits upon which many people in our society have come to rely. Ours is a rapidly aging population because the number of children born into it becomes smaller and smaller and smaller, relative to the size of our country.
Since a pagan Supreme Court, overriding the Christian conscience of centuries, chose to kill children in 1973, millions of them have been butchered without ever seeing the light of day, even for a moment. Abortion also coarsens our moral discourse and brutalizes our people.
It is said that even Nazi Germany was not quite as callous with regard to nascent infant life as our unelected judges have made our country. Abortion has also contributed to the treatment of women as objects, rather than as subjects, of rights and duties, has made us more callous as regards the commission of lesser crimes and is a bullet aimed at the heart of marriage and family life. It has ruined the trust we used to have in doctors, nurses and the health care business. In short, procured abortion may well be the death knell of our society.
As with other forms of wrongful activity sanctioned or winked at by the government, procured abortion is for the killers and those who support them, immensely profitable. Abortuaries are gold mines for their operators. Killer physicians and surgeons, distaining the Hippocratic Oath, travel hundreds of miles to assassinate a few children, and you may be sure that that kind of doctor or nurse does not work for nothing.
Many courageous people have taken up the pro-life cause, and one of the things that we have found that is most helpful in dissuading mothers who are on the way to killing their children are ultrasound images of their children recumbent in the womb. To that end, Rockford advocates of pro-life causes, braving the harassment of those paid to protect the abortuaries from suffering financial ills, have arranged for ultrasound procedures at no cost to the mothers of the condemned children in the hope that some, and indeed as many as possible, might be dissuaded from that purpose.
Recently the abortuary functionaries and those publicly charged to protect them deceived the people who were willing to provide these services here into thinking they had permission to do so and then drove them off because they had not paid the license fees for so doing, the fees of which they had not been, as far as I know, apprised in the beginning. I am reliably informed that those in charge of the police department were in no way collaborators in this deception.
In a meeting of the City Council on Monday night, the Mayor of Rockford, the Honorable Lawrence Morrissey, said that the Legal Department would assist the pro-life people providing this service with the necessary licenses upon the payment of the fees exacted by our politicians for this licensure. The pro-life people in this diocese are courageous people who endure a good deal of discomfort, raillery and obloquy from those who maintain and staff the local abortuary. Nor may those people be subject to our contempt. As the Gospel of last Sunday tells us, those who serve mammon must hate God. They have chosen the master to whom they pay homage, and their master rewards them with great financial gain.
A week or so ago, one member of the pro-life movement in Rockford attempted to instruct the City Council on the anomalies of the situation. I do not know to what effect. It must be said, and tearfully, that we do not rely on our public legislators for a great deal in the way of ethical conduct (to say nothing of morally upright behavior), but perhaps some good is done. In the meantime, I ask all in the diocese to pray for the pro-life people here, in Aurora and throughout the diocese that we will be able to dissuade through the use of ultrasound procedures a few more mothers from destroying the children who have been given God’s great gift of life. Many things happen in this world for which there is no rational explanation.
Speaking of children, in the 18th Chapter of St. Matthew’s Gospel, we read that He called a child over, placed it in their midst and said: “Amen I say to you, unless you turn and become like children you will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven . . . and whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me
. . . see that you do not despise one of these little ones,” and then He adds the frightening phrase, “I say to you that their angels in Heaven, always look upon the face of my Heavenly Father.” (Mt 18:10) Foolhardy indeed are those who would court the wrath of angels.
We pray then for the pro-life people of the Diocese of Rockford to bless and encourage all their efforts to remove from our midst and indeed from society at large the peril of procured abortion. We pray for their safety and for God’s choicest graces for all of them.

National Catholic Register sheds light on Rockford abortion mill.

In the past Rockford IL has been known as a great industrial city, the city of churches, the Forest City, and now they have a new distinction: The home of the “Nation’s most infamous abortion clinic”. This is not just our opinion; this is from the National Catholic Register, a widely read national publication. Other publications that share the same views are Life Site news, Life Dynamics, and other national outlets, too many to mention here.    Rockford, you deserve better than this….

A Pro-Life Victory at Nation’s Most Infamous Abortion Clinic?
by Matthew Archbold Sunday, September 19, 2010
From the grotesque and offensive window displays including rubber chickens hanging from a crucifix, a nun in a coffin, and a Jesus statue making an offensive gesture, to the blasting radio attempting to drown out pro-lifers, to the clinic’s owner brandishing a chainsaw the abortion clinic in Rockford Illinois is rightly one of the most infamous clinics in the country.
Now, in what has to be one of the clearest “the world is upside down” stories, police in Rockford, Ill., threatened to arrest the drivers of an ultrasound truck outside of an abortion clinic for offering free ultrasounds.
This was especially surprising (if anything can be surprising in Rockford at this point) because Kevin Rilott of the Rockford Pro-Life Initiative, said that pro-lifers had been working for months with police to bring the ultrasound truck to Rockford. “We spent a month dotting our I’s and crossing our t’s,” he said.
Here’s video of the incident:
Rilott called it “a harassment technique” designed to dispirit the prayerful protesters as well as keeping women from seeing an ultrasound of the baby in their womb.
Shortly after the incident, Rilott vowed to fight the city’s decision. “This is a double standard that is not tolerable,” he said. “We’re gonna do what we can to make this public.”
And it was then that Tom Brejcha of the Thomas More Society got involved. Brejcha has been fighting for the rights of pro-lifers for years in Rockford but said this incident even surprised him.
Brejcha explained that the city threatened to arrest the drivers of the truck on the grounds that it was “soliciting” in the street. But Brejcha called that “ridiculous.”
The ordinance entitled “ARTICLE III. CHARITABLE SOLICITATIONS – Sec. 24-48. states: “Charitable solicitation means conduct whereby a person solicits property, financial aid, gifts in money, donations, contributions, any article representing monetary value, sells, or offers to sell, a product, article, tag, service, publication, ticket, advertisement, or subscription on the plea or representation, whether expressed or implied, that the proceeds from the solicitation or sale are for a charitable purpose…
But Brejcha points out why the ordinance had no relevance to the ultrasound truck: “They were offering a free ultrasound with no strings attached…The ordinance forbids solicitation of something of value, this is something for free. It’s giving something away,” Brejcha said, “I was astonished that the city of Rockford would take this position.”
Brejcha was scheduled to meet with the city on this issue among others on Friday. And then on Saturday it was announced by Pro-Life Corner, the website of the pro-life movement in Rockford, “The operators of the mobile ultrasound unit along with their lawyers are in the process of gaining permission to come back to Rockford. We hope and fully expect to see them here in the next few weeks.”
It seems like a victory for pro-lifers but they fully expect more shenanigans from the city as well as the clinic. And Rilott said they’ll fight it with everything in their power through legal means, through the media, but mostly through prayer. Rilott said that praying in front of the clinic causes the clinic officials to act outlandishly, especially, he said, prayers from priests. “When they see priests quietly praying, the owner comes out with the chainsaw, put out signs,” he said. “They know what works.”
And he says the prayers are already working. Rilott said that twelve to fifteen years ago the clinic in Rockford performed about 80 to 100 abortions a week but that number is down to about 20 abortions per week.  We’ll continue to keep you updated.

Will The Rockford Abortionist Please Stand Up?

True Pro-Life Heroes Expose Rockford Abortionist
The Missionaries to the Pre-born gathered over 100 Christians on a Sunday morning to stand up for Christ and His pre-born children who are facing death.  These faith filled people stood outside the Unitarian church that gives cover to Rockford abortionist Stewart Kernes.  This church is located in Wisconsin.

When abortionist Kernes pulls into the Rockford abortion mill he always has a baseball cap pulled down almost covering his eyes and a hand that covers his face.  He wants to kill babies in secret without people knowing who he is or what he does – now what he does has been exposed to the world.
More than 100 people came out to speak up for the pre-born outside the church of abortionist Stewart Kernes!  Several people stopped to thank us for our efforts, and to even get involved on behalf of the pre-born!  The rain stopped just while we were there.  It was raining when we arrived; stopped; and then started again as we were closing in prayer!  We covered nearly half a mile as the cars going by had to run the gauntlet that was set up on both sides of the road.  We went from one side of a hill down through the valley where the church was to the hill on the other side. We called it the valley of truth or the valley of rebuke.
May the Lamb that was slain receive the reward of His suffering!
Below is a short video and report from Missionaries to the Pre-born who organized this event

Women: One Of The Many Victims Of Abortion

It’s Time For The Truth To Be Told In Rockford
My name is Renee’ Scrivano, and I am the Regional Coordinator for the north central Illinois area.  My abortion story was “my little secret” for over 15 years.  I could count on one hand those I trusted to know….

In 2003, a friend connected me with Silent No More.  I was headed for the March for Life Rally in Washington DC and she encouraged me to hold her sign and walk with the others who were Silent No More.  I remember coming out of the hotel the morning of the march carrying the sign, backwards, full of fear and shame.
When I arrived to the March for Life, I reluctantly turned the sign around.  During my search for the group, walkers from the march would stop, read my sign and offer words of encouragement.  One man fell into my arms and said “I’m sorry for what you had to go through!”  During the march, I remember a protester yelling profanities at other walkers.  When she saw me with my sign that read “I Regret My Abortion”, she just looked at me, stopped yelling, and walked away.
For the first time, I realized the importance of telling my abortion story.  What was my secret became something that God could use to help others.  The Silent No More Campaign has given me the strength and courage to tell my abortion story.
I would like to personally invite you to hear the abortion stories of 16 women from Chicago, Milwaukee, Sterling, Rockford, Beloit, and many other cities in between.
The 3-minute stories are powerful and will definitely change your life!!

On Friday September 17, an estimated nine children died at Rockford’s abortion mill.  We were blessed to have a new Pastor join us in prayer this morning.
On Wednesday September 22, an estimated seven children were killed inside the Rockford abortion mill.  Again this morning we were led bya faith-filled Pastor who slowly walked the sidewalks around the mill praying for the children and mothers inside.
We believe he and all the other people who pray for life in Rockford had their prayers answered, as one young woman left the mill before the abortionist arrived.  She was in tears when she left and did not speak to the sidewalk counselors.  Thankfully she did not return.
Every child that was aborted this morning had a Pastor who loved them and many people throughout Rockford who were praying for them.

Life Chain & Silent No More Event
on Respect Life Sunday October 3, 2010
Life Chain starts at 2:00pm at the intersection of  Highcrest Road and Alpine Road in front of Holy Family Church in Rockford.
Signs will be available to hold during the Life Chain that say “Jesus Heals & Forgives,”
“Abortion Kills Children,” and “Women/Men Do Regret Abortion.”
The Silent No More event immediately follows the Life Chain at 3:15pm at the Peace Plaza on Perryville Road in Rockford.
Come and hear testimonies of women and men who have experienced first-hand the painful lie of "choice".
This is a wonderful opportunity to show support for your post-abortive sisters & brothers.

On September 15, President Barack Obama addressed the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute’s 33rd Annual Awards. In his remarks, he made reference to the Declaration of Independence. He said, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, endowed with certain inalienable rights: life and liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on the president’s words:
There are several errors here, though only one that really matters. On a small scale, Jefferson chose "unalienable" instead of "inalienable," and following the word "rights" there is no colon: instead it should read, "that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness." What really matters, however, is the omission of any reference to God: after "equal" it should read, "that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights…."
Some are blaming the president for this error, but it is his speech writers, and those who vetted his address, who are to blame. The prepared remarks, as released by the White House, omit the word "Creator." Since this got by so many in the White House, it makes us wonder whether only incompetence was at work. While Obama may be given a pass, it is striking nonetheless that this omission got by a former constitutional law professor.
There are four references to God in the Declaration. God is the author of the "laws of nature and nature’s God"; he is the "Creator" who "endowed" us with "unalienable rights"; he is "the Supreme Judge of the world"; and he provides "the protection of Divine Providence." As a former professor of political science, I made sure my students understood this, but evidently none of those who write or vet the president’s speeches learned this in college. They should pay more attention, especially given the suspicion that Obama likes his religion lite.

Of Dogs, Illegal Drugs, And Free Ultrasounds

There are two groups in Rockford who are offering free help to its citizens and who have at least one thing in common.  One group gives away condoms and syringes purchased in part with taxpayer dollars.  The other group gives away free ultrasounds, paid for by free will donations at no cost to the taxpayers.  Both groups are trying to save lives…..

Below are a couple of examples that illustrate the hypocrisy of some in the city of Rockford government.
Before we proceed, we want to make this clear:  The purpose of this article is NOT to discredit a Rockford based organization called “THAT”, (Total Health Awareness Team); the purpose of this article is indicate the double standards of some in the Rockford city government.  Some in the city government seem to be directly or indirectly supporting “T.H.A.T”.  They are trying to prevent death and injury to a segment of the population, for example, users of illegal drugs and prostitutes.  Trying to save lives is a noble cause.
When city officials ordered a free ultrasound mobile unit to leave town they interfered with the rights of the other group of volunteers (the pro-life community), who also were trying to promote total health and safety and prevent death to the baby and possible injury or death to the mother by offering a free ultrasound to the mother so she can have a true “choice”.
The group called "THAT", Total Health Awareness Team,  has been allowed to hand out free needles to illegal drug users in Rockford.  Considering these needles are used to inject illegal drugs into people and can destroy lives or can even kill a person, we question the wisdom of the government for being involved in such a program because you should not do good with one hand and evil with the other.
We have difficulty understanding why this service is promoted by our government, a government who claims to be against illegal drug usage and prostitution.  At the same time, the same government interferes with the pro-life citizens offer of free life saving help to mothers in need, that is free ultrasounds.
See Story & Video:  City Of Rockford Orders Free Mobile Ultrasound Unit To Leave Rockford Immediately Or Face A Warrant.
A point of interest is “THAT” has government blessings from the Illinois Department of Public Health.  A Rockford Register Star article indicated this organization operates on an annual budget of $180,000.  Here is one of our concerns:  Under the name of total health awareness they give out free condoms.  If someone receives a condom it is fair to assume they will find someone to use it with.  Therefore, this service could promote further prostitution.
The other concern is that these well-intended people say they are concerned about health issues and the transmission of diseases, yet they give away syringes, with the best of intentions, but unfortunately that service could be promoting further use of drugs via the free syringes.  According to their own information, in 2009 they gave away 56,379 syringes.  That’s a lot of drugs being used and even with a clean syringe illegal drug use can never promote good health.
These two groups have the health and safety of people in the community in mind.  The one group, “THAT” operates with taxpayer and foundation money and is supported by government bodies, i.e. Illinois Department of Public Health.  The pro-life group operates with concerns about the mother and the baby at no cost to the taxpayers and with no governmental support.  The only thing the pro-life citizens receive is interference from the local government.
Why the double standard, when both groups are trying to save lives?  Is the life of a prostitute or drug addict more valuable than the life of a mother or her baby?  Of course, not.  All life is precious and should be protected.
There is a strange disconnect between what the Rockford government says and does regarding concern for the life of prostitutes and drug addicts and the lack of concern, to the point of contempt, towards a mother in need and her baby.
In the video below you will see Wayne Webster, the abortion clinic landlord, taking dogs into the main door of the abortion surgical center.
These dogs are brought through a door marked "main entrance" at the Northern Illinois Woman’s Center on days they are performing surgeries on women.
It really makes one wonder if those in charge of the city of Rockford are even concerned for the health and safety of women when animals are allowed into a surgical center and drug users have been given free needles to continue their illegal drug use.

Papal Trip Tops Expectations

September 20, 2010  Here is how Catholic League president Bill Donohue summarized the papal trip to the United Kingdom:

Almost everyone was surprised by both the size of the crowds that came out to greet Pope Benedict XVI and the enthusiasm he generated. British Prime Minister David Cameron was particularly kind, praising the pope for the "searching questions" he posed. Perhaps most gratifying was the way the BBC, no friend to Catholics, treated the Holy Father. "A pope who had previously been regarded as someone rather cold, professional, aloof and authoritarian," wrote David Willey, "had suddenly been perceived as a rather kindly and gentle grandfather figure." Not only that, but the pope’s speech at Westminster was dubbed a "triumph," moving one British notable to say his performance was "sheer magic."
In the U.S., the coverage began and ended on a mixed note. Far and away the most unfair coverage came from CNN and the New York Times. CNN proved relentless with its criticism of a male-only clergy, even going so far as to highlight some excommunicated women who think they are priests. The Times was just as fixated on one topic: the sexual abuse scandal. Take today’s newspaper, for example. On page 4, there is a 1224-word story on a non-story: readers are treated to a rehash of old cases of abuse that took place in Belgium. To find out about the pope’s trip, which garnered only 704 words, the reader must turn to page 11.
It does not speak well for CNN and the New York Times that Catholic critics on the other side of the Atlantic look eminently fair by comparison. Can’t wait to see what CNN has in store for us this Saturday night when it airs a "documentary" on the pope. From the looks of things, it appears it will pick up where the Times left off last spring when it sought to blame the pope for the scandal. We’ll see.

As Pharaoh's Heart Is Hardened, The Christians Of Rockford Stand Strong

10:00 PM- 9 18 10- Please Note: This article has been re-posted. The first article was a draft version and should not have gone out. Below you will find the finished story. Our staff apologizes for any inconvenience this may have caused.
The city of Rockford and local pro-abortion forces seem driven in an almost obsessive way to shut down and stop pro-life efforts to help mothers and children at Rockford’s abortion mill.
This editorial is written as a thank you to the hundreds of brave and faith-filled Christians who have stopped, dead in their tracks, the schemes to silence pro-life efforts.

We won’t even go into the well-documented non-actions taken by the city concerning assaults against pro-life citizens that the city has refused to prosecute.
A homeless man hit by an abortion clinic worker’s car and the numerous code violations by the abortion facility have been ignored by the city legal department.   These are some of the things pro-life citizens have to deal with when they are opposing the killing of babies and the culture of death in Rockford, IL.
Some in the city of Rockford have had two agendas that you, the pro-life citizens of Rockford, have been able to stop.
The first on the agenda was the bubble zone that Alderman Karen Elyea proposed and which was, to our knowledge, supported by the city legal department and the ACLU.  It looked as if it were a smoke-filled back room decision.   It might have gone through had the pro-life citizens of Rockford not said, "NO".
Pro-lifers began praying and followed up with countless phone calls and emails that flooded the aldermen’s and mayor’s offices.  Then pro-lifers  filled the city council chamber and spilled over to the hall outside at the council meeting and demanded the rights of sidewalk counselors, to offer help to mothers and children in need, not be interfered with. First amendment rights to free speech and assembly have been and are being suppressed by the city legal department for too long.
Because of the efforts of Rockford pro-life citizens, the bubble zone was burst.
Not to be stopped that easily, the city legal department saw another chance to interfere with Rockford’s pro-life citizens offers of help in the form of free ultrasounds.   Pro-lifers worked for a month with the Rockford police department at the highest levels to gain approval for a mobile ultrasound to offer help to mothers in need in Rockford.   It was approved by the Rockford police department.
Then the city legal department decided to strike.  Using some vague ordinance accusing the mobile ultrasound vehicle of "soliciting business" on the streets of Rockford, the city legal department ordered the unit out of the city.  But they forgot two things:
The first was the love of Rockford pro-lifers that motivates their desire to help mothers in need no matter how hard Wayne Webster, the abortion mill landlord, seemingly working with the city legal department, tries to stop them.
The other was that Rockford pro-lifers actually looked at the city ordinance for themselves. The ordinance (below) was found that clearly shows the mobile ultrasound is not a business but a charity:
The following words, terms and phrases, when used in this article, shall have the meanings ascribed to them in this section, except where the context clearly indicates a different meaning:
Charitable solicitation  means conduct whereby a person solicits property, financial aid, gifts in money, donations, contributions, any article representing monetary value, sells, or offers to sell, a product, article, tag, service, publication, ticket, advertisement, or subscription on the plea or representation, whether expressed or implied, that the proceeds from the solicitation or sale are for a charitable purpose.
Charitable purpose  means the use of money or property for the benefit of any charitable, religious, benevolent, humane philanthropic, patriotic, or eleemosynary purpose.
As you can read for yourself, this shows beyond a doubt that the totally free ultrasounds that were being offered to poor women have nothing to do with someone soliciting business for profit. Pro-lifers were offering a completely free service to help poor mothers and children.
Armed with prayer, countless phone calls to city officials, and this ordinance, pro-life citizens again filled a city council meeting, even filling the halls outside.  When the aldermen heard the clear explanation of the devious and malicious way the mobile ultrasound was driven out of Rockford, things began to change.
Because of you, the pro-life citizens of Rockford, who will not let anti-life bureaucrats block legal efforts to offer mothers an alternative to killing their children inside the most bigoted, anti-God abortion killing center in the United States, the city of Rockford is being forced to reconsider their position.
The operators of the mobile ultrasound unit along with their lawyers are in the process of gaining permission to come back to Rockford.  We hope and fully expect to see them here in the next few weeks.  We suspect the city will delay and drag its feet on this as long as possible, but this life-saving effort will not be stopped.
The city of Rockford is not to be dissuaded easily.  In a rather vindictive strike at pro-life citizens the legal office allegedly ordered the Rockford police department to refuse to communicate in any way with the leaders of the Rockford pro-life movement unless it is an emergency situation. Pro-lifers and the Rockford police were developing a working relationship in an effort to ensure the safety and rights of pro-lifers.  As far as we know, Mr. Wayne Webster can and does communicate with city officials and the Rockford police department on a regular basis. Problems between the pro-life community and the city cannot be resolved without open communications. What the city has done, by their ignoring our pleas for help and using delaying tactics on our grievance procedures, has now forced the pro-life community into costly legal litigation. We maintain that good leadership in the majority of the city departments could have prevented this time-consuming and expensive court battle. As time progresses we will show just how irresponsible some of these leaders have been.
Jesus said, "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me."  John 14: 1
Should we be worried about the city legal department going after the civil rights of pro-lifers?  No, we need to be vigilant in watching their every move, as we are with all who make the culture of death possible.
Christ is our sure foundation, and you, the pro-life citizens of Rockford, have shown yourselves more than able to counter the death-dealing maneuvers of the Rockford abortion industry and those who do their dirty work.
As we continue to fight the battle to end the unspeakable crimes committed against innocent victims inside Rockford’s abortion mill, we need not fear what will come.  The Christians of Rockford, guided by Jesus Christ, will forever stand against the evil of murdering children for as long as it takes to end these crimes against God, babies, and all of humanity.
