Editor,
Recent newspaper stories tell of an elderly woman who smothered and killed eight of her babies. Another tells of a man who purposely conceived a child with the intent of killing it after birth in order to “get even” with his wife. Closer to home we’ve seen two young people brutally murdered in Apple River. Human life has become expendable for any reason. Many will be quick to point the finger at guns or violent video games or violence in movies and television. We should stop looking at the superficial causes and go to the root of the problem: abortion. Since 1973 when abortion was legalized in our country, over 48,000,000 babies have died violent deaths. Excuses given for abortions vary, but the vast majority( 97%) are done for convenience. Imagine using that excuse for the murders I’ve previously cited. Eight babies smothered for convenience. Two people murdered for convenience. It just doesn’t fly, does it? When we so cheapen human life that we allow a baby to be killed in the womb for any reason we can only reap the reward of that action; that is a complete disregard for any and all human life at any stage. We now have a couple of generations of young adults who have grown up with the abortion mentality. They’ve been told that it’s not a baby until after it’s born, it’s just a blob of tissue or a product of conception. What a ghastly lie! Doctors and learned scientists will tell you that a human life begins at conception. All that life needs is time and nourishment to grow. We must start educating our young people that life is a precious gift. It’s not to be taken for granted or taken away by anyone.
Editor,
I feel I must reply to the letter of January 27.
I, too, am adamantly pro-life. We do have politicians out here who share her values and her concern for the unborn. Not all, but most, are Republicans. That being said, I must refute the writers points. The pro-life movement is just that: pro-life, from conception to natural death. To see that we are concerned with both the parents and the unborn child, and the children who have been fortunate enough to have already been born, one need look no further than our own Pregnancy Center. They give aid to pregnant women and to women who have already given birth. They are there to support them with clothing, diapers, help them find food and housing, and moral support. This is just one of many across our country. Many pro-life organizations, to the dismay of Planned Parenthood, are counseling teens about abstinence. It is, after all, the only fool proof method of preventing an unplanned pregnancy.
The idea that abortion is a constitutional right is highly questioned by many legal minds.
Let’s look at the “fruits” of abortion, shall we? Child abuse has increased over 500% since legalized abortion. Human life has been devalued to the point that the aborted babies parts are being sold for medical purposes. The Chinese use aborted babies for food delicacies. Human life at all stages is being cheapened-if one is old, ill, retarded, handicapped in any way, well then, just get rid of them. Look at the euthanasia program in the Netherlands. It’s only a matter of time before the US will allow someone else to make the decision whether you live or die. Frightening, isn’t it? And these are the “choices” the pro-abortion crowd seems to feel are just great.
Mother Theresa once said that when one has no respect for life in the womb, one loses respect for all life. Her words were prophetic and oh, so true.

Since this letter was written the tragic case of Terri Schiavo in Florida has already passed. Euthanasia has been practiced in this country in the dark corners of hospitals and nursing homes for years. The Terri Schiavo case is the result of an activist legal system in this country and it has brought about the executing of an infirm citizen of the US.

I would like to respond to Susan Cain’s recent guest column. Her challenge to pro-lifers to adoptions has been used by pro-abortion advocates for over 30 years with no credence. We pro-lifers put our time and money where our mouth is. We support thousands of Catholic, Lutheran, and other Social Service organizations as well as thousands of Pregnancy Centers all over the country. Unlike Planned Parenthood, who receives millions of our taxpayer dollars every year to do their pro-death work, crisis pregnancy centers use only funds donated by private citizens and church organizations. The majority of staff and workers at CPC’s are volunteers. I recommend to any one, no matter what your perspective on this issue, that you take time and take a tour of the local Pregnancy Center and see for yourself the wonderful work they are doing, not only for the babies, but for the mothers and the children after birth.
I ask the pro-abortion people- how can you reconcile pro-death (pro-abortion) with your anti-capital punishment stance? How do you feel about McVeigh, the man responsible for the Oklahoma City bombing? If the government executes McVeigh it will be the first Federal government execution in 37 years. Yet the Federal government allows the execution of 4400 babies every day through legalized abortion. If you compare the kill ratio of McVeigh to the abortionists, it will be 41,000,000:01.

Since this letter was written the government couldn’t execute McVeigh quick enough to satisfy the left’s lust for blood.
Editor,
We live in an age of great concern for our health. Then why would someone do something that has the potential risks of breast cancer, uterine perforation, bowel perforation, sterility, psychological problems, depression, and even suicide? These are just some of the effects of abortion on a woman. Abortion mills are usually not subject to the same strict scrutiny and standards as are other clinics and hospitals. In many states the abortionist doesn’t even have to be a doctor! If you were going to have a surgical procedure wouldn’t you want the best care possible? Wouldn’t you want the cleanest, most knowledgeable hospital and doctor and staff? Or would you settle for whatever came along? How can this be any better than the infamous “back alley abortions” the pro-abortion people keep touting? The big difference is that by legalizing abortion we have a multi-million dollar business and a political strong arm that preys on women. Abortion does not liberate women; it makes them the second victim in a ghastly procedure that ends in the death of a child.
Editor,
There was a time in this country, when if a person stood to defend the helpless or defenseless from harm to life or limb, that person would be called “hero”. Today, when helpless, defenseless unborn children are being ripped apart limb from limb, literally, and killed during an abortion, those who try to defend the child from harm are called radicals and our views “too controversial”
When did trying to preserve a human’s life become a controversy? And why? It began in 1973 when the Supreme Court decided it was a woman’s right to have an abortion (destroy her unborn child). And make no mistake about it- an abortion results in the death of an unborn child whether it’s 6 weeks after conception, when the heart starts to beat or 9 months from conception, during the actual birthing process, when it’s called a partial birth abortion. The right to choose should be prior to conception, not after conception.
Since legalized abortion in 1973, an estimated 47 million children have died in the US alone from abortion. In what way would over 1.5 million (per year) new taxpayers, social security contributors, possible scientists, doctors, nurses, blue collar workers, etc., help our current society for the better? How many women would not need psychiatric counseling because they don’t suffer from Post abortion syndrome? If you don’t have an abortion, PAS doesn’t happen!
And please, don’t give me the overpopulation rhetoric! It has been shown that the entire population of the world could fit in the state of Texas with each person having 1500-1800 square feet of living space. That would leave the rest of the entire world for areas to produce food and manufacture products!
Editor,
With all the natural disasters occurring in this day and age, we so often see figures of death tolls numbering in the thousands and we mourn the loss of so much human life. We’d be a cold unfeeling people if we did not mourn! And yet in our nation alone, over 1.5 million babies are killed every year from abortion and we remain silent. Why? Why should a death from abortion be less of a disaster than a death from a hurricane or an earthquake? Each death costs one human life. The unborn child is not a “potential human being” but is a “human being with potential”.
We need to educate our fellow citizens about abortion. We don’t condemn the women who get abortions but they need to know exactly what happens to the child and to them during and after an abortion. Everyone should take responsibility for their own actions. The “choice” in pro-choice should come before conception, not after! More than 97% of all abortions are done for convenience of the mother. That’s a wicked form of birth control.
Please take time to study abortion and its effect on women, men, and our country. You’ll be stunned at what you’ll see. An increase in physiological problems, suicide, physical injury, and a whopping 500% increase in child abuse!
Let’s help women who have unplanned pregnancies, not kill the child. This is not a casual statement; Catholic, Lutheran, and other social service organizations and pregnancy centers all across the country are putting their money where their mouth is.
