Ask Our Lord for Help and Trust

“Oh man of little faith, why did you doubt?”

In the June, 2017 edition of the Christian Century magazine, in his article entitled The Temporary Gift of Marriage, Craig Barnes writes: It was the pastor’s last marriage prep meeting with Mike and Sue before their wedding. They had completed all the preparation work on the sacramental dimensions and practical issues of their new life together. Now all that was left was to finalize the wedding ceremony. As they were about to review the proposed liturgy that the pastor had drafted, Mike said, “Before we get into this, I have to say I’m really sacred.”

Seeing his fiancée’s stunned, pained expression, he said quickly, “Oh, I’m not afraid of marrying you, Sue. I’m just terrified of losing you.” Then he looked back at the pastor and explained, “Several years ago, my mother died, and it almost killed me.” Turning back to his fiancée, Mike continued, “What if something happens to you too? I can’t imagine how I would survive.”

The pastor wanted to say something like, Oh, Mike, don’t worry about that. You’re both young and there are so many wonderful years ahead for both of you. But he had buried too many young people to say that. So, as compassionately as possible, he said, “In my experience 100 percent of all marriages eventually come to an end, and you’ll never beat those odds”. Continue reading

Inspiring Joy in Others by Christ

Inspiring Joy in Others by Christ

“Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.”

For more than fifty of his more than eighty years, Nurney Mason was a barber in the United States House of Representatives. Nurney Mason cut hair out of a tiny booth in the basement of the Rayburn Office Building — his little stall saw nearly as much history as the floor of the Capitol itself. And every day, he brought to his job not only his barbering skills, but kindness, optimism and encouragement He would greet everyone — whether powerful Congressman or lowest-level staffer — with a solid handshake and a knowing smile. Mason stayed upbeat, day after day, the vibrations of his clippers surely jarring his wrists over the half century he worked.

He was asked by one of his Congressional customers how he stayed so upbeat and happy all the time.

Nurney Mason replied simply, “I just make (joy) right here. I create joy where I stand.Continue reading

Marriage, Crime and Abortion

Seeking the Reason Behind our Polarized Society

By Larry Plachno

What do marriage, crime and abortion have in common? Actually, quite a lot if you Larry-150x1 blueare seeking the reasons behind our polarized American society.

For quite a number of years the demographers have known how our society is highly polarized when it comes to presidential elections. Red counties tend to believe in responsibility, religion and families. They are typically suburban or rural and usually vote for conservative candidates. Blue counties tend to believe in rights, and may have problems with crime and poverty. They typically have higher population densities and vote for liberal candidates.

This same situation again played out in the recent 2016 Clinton/Trump Presidential election. While there are exceptions, the red counties voting conservative and the blue counties voting liberal tended to fall into the same traditional patterns. What the demographers and researchers want to know is why? Why is it that on one side of the county line you have more income equality but the other side of the county line has rich and poor? Why is it that one side of the county line has more people going to church regularly while the other side of the county line has more crime? Why is it that one side of the county line supports responsibilities and families while the other side of the country line supports rights and abortion? Continue reading

Rights, Responsibilities and Population Density

Rights, Responsibilities and Population Density

Are we missing the basics?

   By Larry Plachno

There is an increasing concern among some demographers and researchers that conservatives, Christians and pro-life supporters may be winning a battle but losing the war. Many do not understand the real issues and reasons behind how social problems, actions and decisions are interconnected.

We live in interesting times. People in the past based decisions on traditions and the practices of previous generations. Today, we are lucky to have the advantage of decades of research into social problems as well as computer-generated statistics. In many cases this data is not only endorsing many of the old traditions but also giving us the reasons behind those decisions. If you give me a few minutes of your time I can walk you through the basics.

Our Polarized Society

While overly simplistic, it is not difficult to split our society into two groups based on a simple question. When faced with an action or decision that could impact others we have two alternatives. We can do what is best for other people and society or we can do what we want regardless of whom we hurt. One side is conservative while the other side is liberal. One side believes in responsibilities while the other side believes in rights. And, ultimately, and to a large extent, one side tends to match with red states and the other side tends to match with blue states. Continue reading

Abortion, Civil War and a Modest Proposal

Abortion, Civil War and a Modest Proposal

ProLifeCorner-  By Larry Plachno

Whether we accept the fact or not, the reality is that the United States is in the Larry-150x1 bluemidst of an undeclared Civil War. One side believes in good and evil and life while the other side believes in choice and abortion. Huge amounts of time, energy and money are involved as the two sides battle each other in politics, legislation and morals.

Are we heading for a bloody civil war over abortion? More than 600,000 Americans lost their lives in the American Civil War fighting over slavery and whether it was right to set aside good and evil to declare groups as inferior. While our country has been involved in other wars, none of them matches the Civil War in the number of deaths. It was easily the most deadly and bloodiest war in our nation’s history and it took place on our own soil.

Even prior to the recent Presidential election there was substantial talk about our country being polarized into two different camps with abortion as a major difference between the two. While there are differences other than abortion, the killing of unborn babies has become a key point between the two sides, much like slavery. Following the election, these differences are again in the news and the possibility of a civil war has been mentioned numerous times. Continue reading

When is Abortion More Than Abortion?

When is Abortion More Than Abortion?

ProlifeCorner-  By Larry Plachno-

Larry-150x1 blue            There have been an increasing number of questions from conservatives regarding the liberal position on abortion. Why is it so important to them? Why do the liberals insist that abortion be funded with tax dollars? Why is abortion tied to marriage and church? And, why do liberals insist on killing a baby instead of allowing him or her to be adopted?

The answers to these questions all go back to the polarization of our society. For liberals, abortion is the “flagship” of their “fleet” of various positions supporting their liberal stand that decisions and actions should be determined by personal choice rather than by judging them as good or evil based on what is best for others. If abortion was eliminated, or at least judged from the standpoint of good and evil, it would seriously weaken the liberal position supporting choice over good and evil. If you give me a few minutes of your time, I will explain the background behind our polarized society and why abortion has emerged as a key point in this struggle. Continue reading

Abortion and the Second American Revolution

Abortion and the Second American Revolution

 ProLifeCorner-  By Larry Plachno

If you have not already figured it out, we are currently going through a very important Larry-150x1 bluetime in American history. Some have called it a Second American Revolution. The actual truth is that what is happening in the United States right now will affect both our country and much of the world for many years to come. Give me a few minutes of your time and I will try to give you some of the basics of what has happened, what is happening, and just how far-reaching it is.

Both in the United States and elsewhere in the world, the rich and the politicians have been trying to take over. Some have called it the “New World Order.” The rich have become richer and the poor have become poorer. They have been doing this by eliminating the middle class, eliminating jobs, eliminating marriage, eliminating babies and children, and eliminating respect for God and Jesus Christ. Continue reading

Abortion, Politics and the Slippery Slope

Abortion, Politics and the Slippery Slope

ProLifeCorner-     By Larry Plachno

Larry-150x1 blueMany people may ask whether there is an obvious connection between abortion, politics and the slippery slope. The demographers and researchers will tell you that there is a very obvious connection. Moreover, this connection explains why our society is falling apart.

Our Polarized Society

Those who have been keeping up with research, or even just reading the news, are aware that our society has become increasingly polarized. A poll by a well-known company in late April of 2016 showed that only 26 percent of Americans feel that the United States is heading in the right direction. An earlier poll of likely voters in February of 2016 disclosed that 81 percent of the respondents felt that the Federal Government is corrupt.

Another poll in April of 2016 showed that nearly 30 percent of Americans felt that the political parties were out of step with the voters. This is increasingly obvious as the presidential election campaign unfolds. On the conservative side, the two candidates with the most support were both mavericks who did not follow traditional politics. Even the liberals have a second candidate who is getting support as an unconventional politician. Much of this reflects the fact that our society has become increasingly polarized in recent decades.                Continue reading

How to Eliminate Abortion at its Cause

How to Eliminate Abortion at its Cause

ProLifeCorner-    By Larry Plachno

In common with many people, I am deeply disturbed and concerned over the taking of Larry-150x1 blueinnocent human lives in abortion. Some of the cruel and painful abortion procedures make this situation inhuman. However, the number of people working against abortion and for life is very positive. But, on the negative side I am concerned that much of this effort is wasted. Many if not most of these pro-life people have not taken the time to look at the primary cause of abortion and work in that area.

When you approach a doctor with an ailment, he or she will do an examination and possibly schedule tests to determine the cause of the problem. This is called a diagnosis and guides the doctor in taking the proper steps to eliminate the problem. Likewise, when you have a problem with your car and take it to the dealer or repair shop, they run tests and diagnostics to find the cause of the problem. Once the cause is known, they can take action to fix the problem. Why do pro-life people not take the time to look for the cause of abortion and then work on that cause to eliminate abortion?

Abortion and our Unsustainable Society

Abortion and our Unsustainable Society

ProLifeCorner-  By Larry Plachno-  Sustainability has recently become an attractive catchword in business and industry. In addition to the obvious meaning that a particular procedure or product can be ongoing or continuous, it also tends to carry the connotations of being healthy and eco-friendly.

Larry-150x1 blue           Our society is no longer sustainable due in large part to abortion and related actions or attitudes. In fact, our society has become unsustainable in three different ways. One is that we can no longer agree on good and evil or common goals. The second is that we have moved to harming society rather than supporting it. And the third is that because of abortion and related actions we have become an endangered species and our society is dying out.

You probably will not find any of these three critical items discussed in the mainstream media to any extent. Yes, topics will come up from time to time but their negative impact on our society is rarely mentioned and little will be said about abortion and related decisions and actions as the cause.
