A fleet of battleships were out on night maneuvers. The weather was terrible, pea soup fog, high winds and seas. The second night was even worse. The captain of one of the ships stood on the bridge all night, wary of just secondhand reports. He didn’t want to chance colliding with another battleship in the open seas. All night he surveyed the night sky and the dark sea.

A story is related about Franklin Delano Roosevelt who became very weary of always smiling and mouthing the usual clichés at White House receptions So one evening he decided to discover if, in fact, anyone was really listening to what he was saying. One by one, as persons approached him with an extended hand, eye contact and a warm SMILE, THE PRESIDENT GRASPED THEIR HANDS AND EXCLAIMED, “I murdered my lovely wife this morning.” Each person would respond with the usual bromides: “How great” or “How wonderful!” or “Continue the marvelous work“.
