How to Defend the Christian Position On Abortion and Marriage

How to Defend the Christian Position On Abortion and Marriage

By Larry Plachno

Larry-150x1 blueAt a recent pro-life gathering it became obvious that while there are a good many people strongly supportive of the Christian position on abortion and marriage, they are not ready and willing to speak up and defend that position. Some are simply afraid to say anything for fear of confrontation or what others will say. Those willing to speak up often admit that they do not know what to say or do.

This is not the time for people to sit on the sidelines and observe. We need everyone out there working to support what we believe in. Sister Lucia dos Santos, the last Fatima seer, sent a letter to Cardinal Carlo Caffarra. In it she said: “The final battle between the Lord and the reign of Satan will be about marriage and the family. Don’t be afraid.” she added, “because anyone who works for the sanctity of marriage and the family will always be contended and opposed in every way, because this is the decisive issue.” Continue reading

Rights, Responsibilities and Population Density

Rights, Responsibilities and Population Density

Are we missing the basics?

   By Larry Plachno

There is an increasing concern among some demographers and researchers that conservatives, Christians and pro-life supporters may be winning a battle but losing the war. Many do not understand the real issues and reasons behind how social problems, actions and decisions are interconnected.

We live in interesting times. People in the past based decisions on traditions and the practices of previous generations. Today, we are lucky to have the advantage of decades of research into social problems as well as computer-generated statistics. In many cases this data is not only endorsing many of the old traditions but also giving us the reasons behind those decisions. If you give me a few minutes of your time I can walk you through the basics.

Our Polarized Society

While overly simplistic, it is not difficult to split our society into two groups based on a simple question. When faced with an action or decision that could impact others we have two alternatives. We can do what is best for other people and society or we can do what we want regardless of whom we hurt. One side is conservative while the other side is liberal. One side believes in responsibilities while the other side believes in rights. And, ultimately, and to a large extent, one side tends to match with red states and the other side tends to match with blue states. Continue reading

Abortion, Civil War and a Modest Proposal

Abortion, Civil War and a Modest Proposal

ProLifeCorner-  By Larry Plachno

Whether we accept the fact or not, the reality is that the United States is in the Larry-150x1 bluemidst of an undeclared Civil War. One side believes in good and evil and life while the other side believes in choice and abortion. Huge amounts of time, energy and money are involved as the two sides battle each other in politics, legislation and morals.

Are we heading for a bloody civil war over abortion? More than 600,000 Americans lost their lives in the American Civil War fighting over slavery and whether it was right to set aside good and evil to declare groups as inferior. While our country has been involved in other wars, none of them matches the Civil War in the number of deaths. It was easily the most deadly and bloodiest war in our nation’s history and it took place on our own soil.

Even prior to the recent Presidential election there was substantial talk about our country being polarized into two different camps with abortion as a major difference between the two. While there are differences other than abortion, the killing of unborn babies has become a key point between the two sides, much like slavery. Following the election, these differences are again in the news and the possibility of a civil war has been mentioned numerous times. Continue reading

When is Abortion More Than Abortion?

When is Abortion More Than Abortion?

ProlifeCorner-  By Larry Plachno-

Larry-150x1 blue            There have been an increasing number of questions from conservatives regarding the liberal position on abortion. Why is it so important to them? Why do the liberals insist that abortion be funded with tax dollars? Why is abortion tied to marriage and church? And, why do liberals insist on killing a baby instead of allowing him or her to be adopted?

The answers to these questions all go back to the polarization of our society. For liberals, abortion is the “flagship” of their “fleet” of various positions supporting their liberal stand that decisions and actions should be determined by personal choice rather than by judging them as good or evil based on what is best for others. If abortion was eliminated, or at least judged from the standpoint of good and evil, it would seriously weaken the liberal position supporting choice over good and evil. If you give me a few minutes of your time, I will explain the background behind our polarized society and why abortion has emerged as a key point in this struggle. Continue reading

Are We Responsible for Encouraging Abortions?

Are We Responsible for Encouraging Abortions?

ProLifeCorner.com-  By Larry Plachno

Larry-150x1 blueA recent discussion on interconnected social problems and the resulting polarization of our society brought forth the suggestion that many of us, including many of the Christians and Catholics reading this, may be responsible at least in part for abortions. While many pro-life people would deny this, I invite you to follow the logic with me and see what we find.

Our Polarized Society

It was the demographers that first publicized our polarized society and related interconnected social problems. They pointed out that in several major elections they could predict voting based the fertility level of a state or area. Those states with the highest fertility levels traditionally swung to the right and voted for conservative candidates and conservative issues while those states with the lowest fertility levels traditionally swung to the left and voted for liberal candidates and liberal issues. Two things are immediately noteworthy. One is that the basis for this is fertility level, which translates into bringing children into the world. The second thing to note is that this question on children tends to polarize our society into the right and the left. Continue reading

Losing Your Life for Christ’s Sake

Losing Your Life for Christ’s Sake

“Anyone who loses his life for my sake… will save it.”

Pierre Claverie (Clav’er aye) was born in Algeria in 1938. He grew up in a loving family of French people who had settled in Algeria. He said he lived in a “colonial bubble,” in other words, completely cut off from the majority Arab population. As a young man he was called to the priesthood and joined the Dominicans in France. Despite the political upheavals, he wanted to return and serve in Algeria. He steeped himself in the Arab culture, learning the language and living close to the people. He wanted to bear witness to Christ’s call to reconciliation between races.

In 1981, Pierre Claverie (Clav’er ee) was made Bishop of Oran. Christians in the region were few in number and surrounded by a dominant Muslim population. As Muslim fundamentalists became more powerful, Christians were threatened and several members of religious orders were assassinated. (Clav’er ee)  became increasingly aware of the danger he was in, but in this situation he also deepened his understanding of the cross. He did not leave but stayed to bear witness to the love and mercy of Jesus and his promise of eternal life. In 1996 Bishop Pierre Claverie (Clav’er ee) and his Muslim driver were blown up by a terrorist bomb. Continue reading

How to Eliminate Abortion at its Cause

How to Eliminate Abortion at its Cause

ProLifeCorner-    By Larry Plachno

In common with many people, I am deeply disturbed and concerned over the taking of Larry-150x1 blueinnocent human lives in abortion. Some of the cruel and painful abortion procedures make this situation inhuman. However, the number of people working against abortion and for life is very positive. But, on the negative side I am concerned that much of this effort is wasted. Many if not most of these pro-life people have not taken the time to look at the primary cause of abortion and work in that area.

When you approach a doctor with an ailment, he or she will do an examination and possibly schedule tests to determine the cause of the problem. This is called a diagnosis and guides the doctor in taking the proper steps to eliminate the problem. Likewise, when you have a problem with your car and take it to the dealer or repair shop, they run tests and diagnostics to find the cause of the problem. Once the cause is known, they can take action to fix the problem. Why do pro-life people not take the time to look for the cause of abortion and then work on that cause to eliminate abortion?

Abortion and our Unsustainable Society

Abortion and our Unsustainable Society

ProLifeCorner-  By Larry Plachno-  Sustainability has recently become an attractive catchword in business and industry. In addition to the obvious meaning that a particular procedure or product can be ongoing or continuous, it also tends to carry the connotations of being healthy and eco-friendly.

Larry-150x1 blue           Our society is no longer sustainable due in large part to abortion and related actions or attitudes. In fact, our society has become unsustainable in three different ways. One is that we can no longer agree on good and evil or common goals. The second is that we have moved to harming society rather than supporting it. And the third is that because of abortion and related actions we have become an endangered species and our society is dying out.

You probably will not find any of these three critical items discussed in the mainstream media to any extent. Yes, topics will come up from time to time but their negative impact on our society is rarely mentioned and little will be said about abortion and related decisions and actions as the cause. The Consequences of Choice

The Consequences of Choice

ProLifeCorner-  By Larry Plachno

Larry-150x1[1]       This subject got started from a discussion concerning the love of God and love of neighbor admonishments of Jesus Christ. Those who have done the research find that basic Christian principles are reflected in the statistics surrounding social problems. In his divine wisdom, Jesus Christ was trying to teach us that judging our actions as good or evil and defining good as what is best for others and society is the way to make our society run well. The reports and statistics have shown that if we follow these basic rules of Jesus Christ, we all come out ahead.

But then the obvious question came up. If people accept “choice” instead of judging their actions as good or evil, and do what they want today instead of what is best for society tomorrow, are there negative consequences?

The answer is “yes.” There are obvious consequences for accepting “choice” today rather than judging our actions over the long haul. A simple example is that if kids were left on their own, many would avoid going to school and would eat candy and cookies instead of balanced meals. The obvious consequences of their choice will be that they will grow up uneducated and malnourished. These same types of consequences follow other “choice” decisions. Continue reading

How Did We Get Into This Mess?

How Did We Get Into This Mess?

ProLifeCorner-   By Larry Plachno-

Rarely does a day go by without someone asking: How did we get into this Larry-150x1[1]mess? We are facing all kinds of social problems including poverty, homelessness, crime and broken homes. Some nationalities are starting to disappear off the face of the earth because of substantially dwindling fertility rates while people are increasingly unable to work together because they no longer have common goals.

Would it surprise you to know that researchers and demographers predicted all of these things decades ago? The problem is that we failed to listen to them because we did not want to talk about good and evil, we did not want to talk about doing what is best for society, we did not want to talk about putting others first, and we certainly did not want to talk about Jesus Christ. Our failure to think about and consider the effects and the consequences of our decisions and actions is what got us into this mess. Continue reading
